Muslim cashiers at Target were quite proud of themselves when they refused to ring up pork- that is until their supervisors gave them a nice dose of reality.
Instead of being fazed by their Muslim employees, executives at the Minneapolis-based Target Corps. told them they can either wear white gloves when ringing up pork, or they can be transferred to other “less glamorous” Target positions.
“We are confident that this is a reasonable solution for our guests and team members,” Target spokeswoman Paula Thornton-Greear said in a statement.
“It is not an issue in most of our stores in the Twin Cities,” she added later, according to NBC News. “There is also no indication that this is an issue in the Minnesota market overall or nationwide.”
“They told all of us who don’t touch pork to go to the sales floor,” said Suhara Robla, a Muslim Target employee in St. Louis. “They really didn’t say why. They just said it was a new policy.”
Some Muslim employees have quit their jobs at Target, incensed that they were transferred to other positions.
“They told me, you have to check this,” Muslim employee Muse Dahir said. “I told them, I can’t do this. You want me to do something that’s against my religion.”
His manager then told him it was part of his job. “I just put down my uniform and I left,” he said.
Jama Omar, a Muslim clerk at a Minneapolis Target, said that he thinks Muslims should not receive special treatment at work.
“If it causes a big problem for your employer, they have to make the decision that’s best for them,” Omar said. “It’s not something to go on strike or file a civil suit. Go somewhere else that will accept your beliefs. There’s millions of jobs.”
