Last Friday, the body of 22 year-old Indiana University student Hannah Wilson was found the very same day she was reported missing. Police have since arrested Daniel Messel, 49, for the brutal murder, and their investigation has continued into this week.
Shockingly, police have found that Wilson was last seen leaving the very same bar where a young Indiana University student Lauren Spierer went missing in 2011. She has never been found. Investigators are now calling the two cases “eerily similar.”
Late last Thursday night, Wilson and her friends were drinking at a hotel in Bloomington, Indiana when they decided to head to head to Kilroy’s Sports Bar for a nightcap. Once they got there, Wilson’s friends decided she was too drunk to come in with them, so they sent her home in a taxi cab at 1 a.m. They said they heard her give the driver her address before they drove off.
Wilson’s body was found at 8:30 a.m. on a deserted road in rural Brown County, which is ten miles from the IU college campus. The autopsy report said that she died of blunt force trauma to the back of the head, and that there were no signs of sexual assault. Her other wounds were defensive wounds which were consistent with “trying to prevent her head from being hit.”
Police arrested Messel after tracing a cell phone found near Wilson’s body to him. His stepdad, Gerald Messel, said that his stepson had spoken of knowing a girl named “Hannah” from the bar scene in Bloomington. He also expressed surprise that Daniel didn’t come home last Thursday night after his usual trivia night at his favorite bar in the city.
Daniel Messel’s past can only be described as violent. He spent eight years in prison in 1996 for battery. In 1989, he was arrested for beating his grandmother and breaking her nose, and he assaulted his girlfriend in 1991.
Police will undoubtedly be investigating Messel for the 2011 disappearance of 20 year-old Lauren Spierer, who disappeared after leaving the same bar Wilson was last seen leaving. Her family continues to look for her to this day.
Messel remains in jail at this time. There are visible claw marks on his arms, likely stemming from Wilson fighting for her young life. Are thoughts and prayers are with her family!
