For weeks now, we have been reporting on the mysterious closings of five Walmarts across the country.
2,200 Walmart employees at five stores in different cities were laid off last Tuesday and given just a few hours notice. Walmart claimed that the stores had to be closed due to plumbing issues, but many have questioned this explanation since all the stores were located in different parts of the country.
Walmart hasn’t been the only chain announcing mass closings. Last month, a “retail apocalypse swept our nation as stores like Radioshack and Office Depot closed thousands of stores across the country.
Fast food restaurants have also been deeply impacted as Americans have made a major shift towards finding healthier options. McDonald’s has announced some major changes to their menu in order to make things simpler and healthier for their customers.
Now, in an attempt to save their businesses, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell have announced that they will be eliminating all artificial ingredients from their menu items.
Taco Bell told the press that they will be using real pepper instead of “black pepper flavor” in their beef from now on, and will also move towards eliminating trans-fat foods by the end of the year. They will also be ridding their nacho cheese of Yellow dye number 6, which has been found to cause cancer in lab animals.
“Yellow 6 caused adrenal tumors in animals, though that is disputed by industry and the FDA. It may be contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals and occasionally causes severe hypersensitivity reactions,”a study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest found in 2010. “Yellow 6 adds an unnecessary risk to the food supply.”
Taco Bell will also be removing Blue number 1 from its avocado ranch dressing, as well as carmine from their tortilla strips.
“Blue 1 was not found to be toxic in key rat and mouse studies,” scientists noted, adding “but an unpublished study suggested the possibility that Blue 1 caused kidney tumors in mice, and a preliminary in vitro study raised questions about possible effects on nerve cells. Blue 1 may not cause cancer, but confirmatory studies should be conducted. The dye can cause hypersensitivity reactions.”
Pizza Hut says that they will be implementing their changes by August, saying that all of their artificial colors will be gone by then.
This move may be too late for them to get their customer’s back, but it’s worth a shot!
