An Ohio mother who was arrested for possession of illicit narcotics appeared in court this week, and she had a very unusual request for the judge.
Kayla Dempsey is a 25-year-old mother of a three year-old son, and she’s became hooked on heroin when she was 18. She managed to kick the habit and stayed clean for five years, until she obtained a prescription for painkillers recently. After she ran out of pills, she returned to heroin and quickly got hooked again.
According to Mad World News, heroin wreaked havoc on Kayla’s life. She had her child taken away, and she lost nearly all of her money.
When most drug offenders are arrested, they are let out and return to drugs within a few days. Kayla knew that if she were set free, she’d go back to heroin, so she made a desperate plea to the judge. She asked him to give her the maximum sentence for her drug charge, which is 30 days in jail. The judge obliged her request, and she is now getting clean as she serves her time.
Kayla acknowledged that detoxing in jail isn’t easy, but she also said it won’t be nearly as hard as staying clean when she’s free.
We can only pray that she finds a way to stay clean and be the best mother to her baby that she can be.
