Former President Jimmy Carter announced on Wednesday that he has received a devastating diagnosis: he has a deadly form of cancer, and it’s already spread all over his body.
“Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body,” Carter, 90, said in a statement, according to Daily Mail. “I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare.”
The statement makes it clear that the cancer has spread, but it does not make it clear where it originated. The liver is rarely the place where cancer starts; instead, it is often one of the first places cancer spreads.
On August 3, Carter announced that he had had surgery to remove a small mass from his liver. The proud liberal was the 39th president of the United States, serving for one term between 1977 and 1981. Since then, he has spent much of his time promoting various health care causes.
