Rick Santorum got some bad news earlier this week when Fox revealed that he had not qualified for the primetime debate tonight. As he prepares for the 5pm debate instead, Santorum is wrestling with more bad news as his son has been charged with a DWI.
According to Daily Mail, 22 year-old Richard John Santorum Jr. was stopped at a DUI checkpoint on July 11 in suburban Virginia at around midnight. The young man, who is a cadet at the Citadel, the esteemed Military College of South Carolina, had “glassy eyes,” “slurred speech” and “showed specific signs of impairment,” according to a police report.
“I don’t try my cases in the press and I don’t have anything to say about my client,” said Christopher Day, the lawyer representing John Santorum in this case.
Santorum’s campaign made it clear on Thursday that they are trying to distance themselves from this case.
“The campaign does not comment on family personal matters,” said Santorum campaign spokesman Matt Beynon.
John Santorum reportedly attended college with his brother Daniel and majored in business. His father’s website says he enjoys swimming, working out, running, boxing, and hunting. The young cadet also enjoys taking care of his pickup truck and listening to country music.
His favorite meal is steak and mashed potatoes, and his pet peeve is sitting in traffic. No word on how he feels about sitting in traffic drunk.
