A U.S. Marine was found dead this week with a gunshot wound to the head at a shooting range at California’s Camp Pendleton Marine Base.

According to ABC, officials say the Marine was taking part in a training exercise in which life ammunition was used early Monday morning. The circumstances of the shooting are now being investigated.

CBS Local has identified the victim as 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Dominic E. Schraft of Vienna, Mo. Schraft joined the Marines in 2014, and he was a radio operator assigned to the 1st Marine Division.
