First Lady Michelle Obama openly complained about not receiving a taxpayer subsidized salary recently. Obama echoed that sentiment recently, saying, “I want to make sure that when she’s working, she’s getting paid the same as men. I gotta say that First Ladies right now don’t get paid, even though that’s a tough job!”
Former First Lady Laura Bush was asked what she thought about this issue while on CSPAN.
When asked by the interviewer, “Mrs. Bush, should the First Lady receive a salary?” Mrs. Bush responded, “No, I don’t think so. There are plenty of perks.”
Among those perks is a private chef and free lodging in the White House – but Mrs. Bush doesn’t want to focus on that. Instead she turns the interview to a different point, asking whether First Ladies should be allowed to have a career while their husband is in office.
This really is the most important question, because it reminds us that First Ladies really aren’t meant to have a “job” in the first place. Their husband was the one who got elected, they were simply along for the ride. Michelle Obama trying to enforce all of her programs and horrible lunch plans is NOT part of the job description, which doesn’t exist because being First Lady isn’t a job.
