Back in July, Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman humiliated authorities when he tunneled out of a maximum security prison. After six months on the run, El Chapo was reportedly captured today.
“Mission accomplished,” Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Twitter. “We have him.”
According to NBC News, law enforcement has confirmed the arrest, saying El Chapo was captured by the Mexican Navy. The Navy had been in charge of carrying out the operation because they were seen as less corruptible than the police force and the army.
The Mexican Navy said in a statement that their marines were acting on a tip when they stormed into a home in the town of Los Mochis just before dawn. They were fired on from inside the building, and a shootout ensued. In the end, five suspects were killed and six were arrested.
