Earlier this week, Celine Dion made the tragic announcement that her beloved husband René Angélil had passed away after an amazing 26 year battle with cancer. He was 73 years-old.
According to IJ Review, Angélil had three bouts with throat cancer during his lifetime, and he was first diagnosed with the disease in 1990. He was not only Dion’s husband, but also her manager and best friend. The couple wed in 1994, and they have been hailed as one of the greatest love stories in music.
Angélil and Dion had three children together: Rene-Charles, and twins, Nelson and Eddy. He is also survived by three adult children from a previous marriage.
Last summer, Dion opened up in an interview about her husband’s influence on her decision to keep performing in Las Vegas despite his terminal diagnosis.
“René really gave me a gift,” she said. “All my grieving, it was during this last year. I think I’ve got this. For now. When it hits me, it’s going to hit me. But my biggest job is to tell my husband, we’re fine. I’ll take care of our kids. You’ll watch us from another spot.”
In that same interview, Dion revealed that Angélil’s dying wish was to pass away in her arms.
Please keep Celine Dion and her family in your prayers during this extremely difficult time.
