A man was killed around 8am Thursday morning as he drove through the city of Berlin, Germany during rush hour when an explosive device in his car suddenly detonated.

According to Daily Mail, police believe the man was a victim of a suspected mafia hit. Photos show the wreckage of the silver VW Passat estate with its windows blown out and front end smashed in. Bild, Germany’s top newspaper, reported that they have been told it was not an act of terrorism, but rather it pertained to organized crime.

“Bild has information that it is definitely not terrorism bur organized crime. Whether it is in connection with rocker crime is not yet clear,” the publication said.

Deputy chief spokesman for Berlin police, Carsten Mueller, told reporters that “investigators are working on the assumption that it was an explosive device” either inside or on the vehicle.

“We believe this was a homicide,” prosecutor’s office spokesman Martin Steltner added.

Berlin is home to thousands of Russians, many of whom have ties to organized crime. We will update you further as this story develops.
