There is a social stigma attached to being a Trump supporter. The media has worked hard to stereotype Trump voters as being ignorant racists. This has some people hiding in the shadows.
That is why Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway believes the polls are wrong. In an interview with a British television station, Conway points out that in online polling, Trump consistently does better than when a voter has to speak with a human being to complete a poll.
Conway explained this by saying, “Donald Trump performs consistently better in online polling where a human being is not talking to another human being about what he or she may do in the election. It’s because it’s become socially desirable, if you’re a college-educated person in the United States of America, to say that you’re against Donald Trump.”
You can hear her explanation in the video below.
This also rang true in the primary. Trump underperformed in polls where voters had to speak with a human to respond. This has led credence to Conway’s theory of there being undercover Trump voters.
She’s not the only one who noticed this as The Daily Mail reported:
A study published last December by Morning Consult, a nonpartisan digital research company, found that at that point in the GOP primary process, Trump performed ‘about six percentage points better online than via live telephone interviewing.’
Morning Consult sampled 2,500 people and compared what they told pollsters with what they told their computers – a scenario that more closely resembles the privacy of a voting booth.
The study also determined that the six-point difference was driven largely ‘by adults with higher levels of education.’
That suggests college-educated voters may be more tuned-in to the social acceptability of preferring one candidate over the other, making them more wary about declaring their support for Trump to another person.
This shouldn’t be shocking given how Trump supporters are mocked and labeled. Many people would prefer to avoid the hassle and not expose themselves to that ridicule.
Please share this if you believe there are undercover Trump voters.
