There has been a lot of furor about the drastic rise in the price of Epi-Pens. As a parent of children with peanut allergies, I can attest to the price gouging. Prior to 2007, the cost of EpiPens weren’t that big of a sock to your wallet.
When you have an anaphylaxis allergy, you need to have multiple lifesaving EpiPens. I keep them in my purse, at home, and then also at school. This really adds up. And with the cost of the shots going from $57 to over $600, it has had massive negative effects for people with these allergies.
This price increase has generated tons of outrage and rightly so. But most of the blame is completely misplaced mainly because our incompetent press don’t do their jobs. First off, Mylan, the company that produces the EpiPens, receives a de facto monopoly on the EpiPens from the FDA regulations. But what’s even worse is how Mylan is politically connected Mylan is in order to maintain this monopoly.
Mylan CEO Heather Bresch just so happens to be the daughter of Democratic US Senator Joe Manchin. But it gets even worse. Bresch is also very generous Clinton Foundation donor.
Now isn’t that interesting given the scandal plagued Democratic nominee pointed a finger at Mylan asking the company to reduce the cost of the lifesaving medication. Hillary didn’t make mention of her ties to Bresch or the fact that the CEO has donated substantial sums of cash to the Clinton “slush fund.”
Watch the video below to hear about Hillary Clinton calling her friend’s actions “outrageous” without mentioning their relationship.
I believe in capitalism, but this is not the free market at work. The free market would foster competition, driving down the cost of the drug. This is an outright government funded and created monopoly.
The government, comprised of people like Bresch’s father, picked her company to be a winner. The government shouldn’t pick winners. Nobody can compete with Mylan on this drug because of government involvement. This is personal now as this scandal involves my children’s lives for the enrichment of Democrat bank accounts.
With the public outcry, Mylan has announced it will decrease costs for some families.
From USA Today:
The company said it would offer coupons covering up to $300 “for patients in health plans who face higher out-of-pocket costs” for the EpiPen Auto-Injector treatment.
Mylan also said it would double the income level at which families are eligible for assistance in purchasing the medication to 400% of the federal poverty level, which stands at $24,300 for a family of four. The company said a family of four with income up to $97,200 won’t pay out of pocket.
Expect Hillary Clinton to take credit for this relief in the cost of the drug. Let’s see if the media presses her to explain her connection to Bresch and Bresch’s father who supports Hillary Clinton.
