I was just thinking of Angela Lansbury the other week and wondering what she was up to. Given her movie career started in 1944, it’s no wonder that this icon is turning 91 years old next month. I grew up with the Angela Lansbury of Murder, She Wrote and she’s probably responsible for all my well-meaning meddling.

My parents, on the other hand, knew her from her career as a star of the Silver Screen when she appeared along with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Charlton Heston, John Wayne, and Ingrid Bergman in classics like The Manchurian Candidate (the original, 1962 version), The Greatest Story Ever Told, and Gaslight.

And, of course, she is Mrs. Potts from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Beauty and the Beast is celebrating its 25th anniversary and Angela Lansbury appeared at Alice Tully Hall in New York to commemorate it. She reprised her role as lead teapot and performed the title song with a presence and personality untouched by the 25 years since the film’s release.

Don’t you agree that Ms. Lansbury is as wonderful as ever?

In Spring of 2017, Emma Thompson will be taking up the teapot mantel of Mrs. Potts in a new live-action-with-lots-of-CGI version of Beauty and the Beast. Emma has the voice and the presence, but Angela is a tough act to follow.

Bonus: As much as I like the ABCNews recording, this is the one that made me tear up a little, especially at the end when the applause starts:

Is Mrs. Potts or Jessica Fletcher your favorite Angela Lansbury character? Or does all your love go to one of her other characters?

Share this to wish her a happy birthday and celebrate her long, colorful career.
