Johnny Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag” played a prominent role in Super Bowl coverage last night. The song was used as a reminder to Americans that despite our differences, we are are still Americans.
Olympic gold medal gymnast Simone Biles introduced the song by speaking about rights that are detailed in the Constitution. “Our forefathers got it right 240 years ago. Equality, freedom, they belong to us all. And in case we falter in our ways, they wrote it down for us to always remember and cherish. We, as Americans, have a duty to uphold and protect those rights. That is what unifies us. And the symbol of our unity has 50 stars and 13 stripes,” Biles said.
You can watch Biles and Harry Belafonte in the video below.
That’s was a terrific opening for the Super Bowl in this highly charged political environment. Johnny Cash songs should be able to unite us all!
