On June 20, 2010, Zak Anderegg was hiking by himself in an Arizona desert when he came upon a deep canyon, and what he found inside was shocking.

Zak made the heartbreaking discovery of an dog at the bottom of the 350 feet deep canyon.

Zak sprung to action and gave the dog a much needed meal.

Unfortunately, Zak didn’t have the supplies to save the dog, so he left him with some food and climbed back up out of the canyon.

The next morning, Zak returned and brought the dog back to the surface.

The poor little dog was very weak, and he had to spend some time in an animal hospital. It took him some time to get his strength back.

Today, the dog, who has been named Riley, lives a good life with a loving family.

The picture below is Riley with the man who saved him.

Today, Riley lives the happy, carefree life he was always meant to, but Zak is still livid about the way he found the pooch. He says there is no way Riley could have gotten into the canyon himself, meaning some sick individual abandoned him by throwing him inside the canyon.

Luckily, Riley was saved.
