A New Jersey police chief has been forced to resign after sending colleagues a series of texts comparing Michelle Obama to a monkey.

Monmouth County SPCA Chief Victor “Buddy” Amato resigned on Wednesday after a lawsuit was filed about the texts by his colleague Sue DesMarais.

“I have never in my life seen anything that bad,” DesMarais said of the texts.

In one of the texts, Amato warned his staff about patrolling “racially mixed areas.” In another, the former police chief compared Michelle Obama’s face to that of a monkey.

“The Monmouth County SPCA has a zero tolerance policy against discrimination and harassment,” Monmouth County SPCA President and CEO Jerry Rosenthal said in a statement. “These allegations have been taken very seriously and have been under a thorough investigation.”

Amato told reporters that he planned to retire in six months anyway, but decided to leave early as a result of all this.

“They were just a bunch of jokes,” Amato told the Press. “Jokes going back and forth between a bunch of the guys.”
