This hidden camera footage shows baggage handlers stealing items from passenger’s bags in “secure” areas of the airport.
The footage was shot at the Miami-Dade airport, where 31 ramp workers have been fired for theft since security cameras were installed in 2012. Many of these workers were then arrested.
“A lot of times there is no other response other than shock that they were caught,” Lieutenant Peter Estis told reporters. “That’s ok with us. As many of them that we can take off the airfield, the better it is for everybody that travels through Miami international airport.”
In the last five years alone, TSA has received over 31,000 passenger claims of items missing from their luggage. More than 25,000 of these were valuable items taken from checked baggage, the others were items stolen from TSA checkpoints.
“I believe there is a connection between baggage thefts and potential terrorism,” police chief at Los Angeles International Airport Pat Gannon said. “I think that is a breakdown in their moral fiber, and that’s why we take it very seriously here.”
Over 500 TSA agents have been fired for theft since 2002.
