Expectant mothers in Finland are being given a box of supplies immediately after they give birth, and what the boxes contain may surprise you.

The boxes the pregnant women receive contains:

  • The box itself, which doubles as a crib. Included is small mattress at the bottom to ensure the baby is nice and comfortable
  • A snowsuit, mittens a hat and little booties for those cold Finnish winters
  • Plenty of unisex baby clothing, like rompers. bodysuits and pants
  • Everything for the bath, like a towel, nail clippers and a toothbrush
  • Picture books and teething toys

The government provides these boxes for free using the country’s tax dollars. Though we can’t say we support this, we can’t deny that the boxes are very helpful to young mothers.

“We are very well taken care of, even now when some public services have been cut down a little,” one mother told the press.

Finland has been providing the boxes since 1938 in an effort to combat their high infant mortality rate. Now, Finland has been named the “Best Place To Be A Mother On Earth!” by the Save The Children Foundation. What a comeback!
