NFL star Tom Brady made a huge statement today by choosing not to visit President Obama with the New England Patriots.

The team took a customary trip to the White House — each year, the NFL champions do this. But the Patriot’s quarterback, Brady, was nowhere to be seen.

Brady’s absence sent a clear message to the administration. Not showing up for the White House event is a big slap in the face to the administration, given the build-up and media attention that the event gets. The quarterback’s publicist unquestionably had her phones ringing off the hooks today with questions from reporters; she gave vague answers to explain Brady’s decision not to attend, citing a “prior family commitment.”

Bravo to Brady, for showing that family comes first — even before the President of the United States.

Obama ignored the fact that Brady was not in attendance. He told the other players, “I usually tell a bunch of jokes at these events, but with the Patriots in town I was worried that 11 out of 12 of them would fall flat.”

According to Yahoo!News, the president only received some “uncomfortable laughter” in response to his jokes.
