Yesterday, we reported that Fox News had abruptly fired Bob Beckel, who was one of the hosts of The Five. On Friday, Fox released a statement in which they slammed Beckel for “taking advantage” of their generosity.

Beckel made a name for himself as the volatile liberal cohost of The Five, but he was also known for his prior struggles with addiction. He has been missing from the show since February, and he checked into rehab to deal with an addiction to prescription medication in april.

In the end, Fox couldn’t deal with Beckel and his problems anymore.

“We tried to work with Bob for months, but we couldn’t hold The Five hostage to one man’s personal issues,” Bill Shine, executive vice president of programming, said in a statement obtained by Daily Mail. “He took tremendous advantage of our generosity, empathy and goodwill and we simply came to the end of the road with him.”

Beckel has been the token-liberal on Fox programming since 2000. Despite his absence, The Five has continued to thrive this year. Since Beckel left the show in February, the show has seen an 8 percent increase in viewers in the coveted 25-54 demographic.
