Michael Riggio, 17, and his friend Ivan Iskenderian were fishing in Middle Harbor off the coast of Australia when they felt a sudden jolt on the side of the boat. At first, the boys thought it was just waves, but then they saw something in the water that left them stunned…

“It was surreal, we couldn’t believe our eyes,” said Ivan.

According to Mad World News, the boys saw a whale circling their boat, and it turns out the animal had a very specific reason for doing so. The whale was looking for assistance, as it had a plastic bag and fishing nets lodged in it’s mouth. The boys tried to help the animal, but it proved to be no easy task.

The whale also approached the boat of Ron Kovacs in the harbor, and he immediately noticed the animal needed help.

“He just popped his head up so you could reach out and remove the garbage. He tried on my boat but we are a bit higher,” Kovacs said. “I made one grab for the bag but missed. He was very inquisitive and more interested in us.”

“They are not dumb for sure,” he added.

The whale ended up returning to the teenagers’ boat, and Kovacs captured the moment they were able to free the trash from his mouth on camera. The whale then thanked the boys by rolling onto it’s side and throwing it’s fins in the air as if to wave to them.
