A former gun-loving U.S. Marine who once weighed 240 pounds has revealed that she underwent surgery to become a woman, and that her new name is Sona Avedian.
Avedian was once a married man named Matthew who was the father of one child and completed six dangerous deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq, but now she says this was her way of “overcompensating” and hiding from her true self.
According to Daily Mail, she began transitioning in 2012 and lost 100 pounds in her journey to becoming a woman. She also shaved and lasered away her facial hair and had breast enhancement surgery.
Avedian says she was living the “American dream” with her beautiful wife and child. Now, she is amicably divorced from her wife Lucy, and is excited about continuing her life as a woman.
“Since I came out I have tried to live a normal life – it’s like anyone, there are good and bad times,” she said. “There are certain things I miss, I lost a lot of friends but I’ve also made a lot of new friends.”
“I was following the American dream – I don’t even know who I’m looking at in the before pictures, it was so depressing,” Avedian continued. “Personally I’m much happier, I don’t have any conflicts with who I am. I am definitely a tomboy and that’s okay. Before I couldn’t stand myself and I couldn’t interact with people.”
Avedian admits that her relationship with her ex-wife has been strained at time, but she says her bond with her 5 year-old daughter has always been strong.
“My daughter and I are awesome, she adores being around me,” she said. “She only remembers me as a woman and I love how we interact, we are so much alike. Even though she’s five, she has really intelligent conversations, especially if you push her to talk. I can talk to her like an adult. Most of our dialogue is cute little banter and I love it.”
Retired from the military, Avedian is now an Uber and Lyft driver in Austin. Though she is currently single, she says she has “met a few nice guys” in Texas.
