We all know those in the media have it out for gun owners and now, the Baltimore Sun isn’t hiding its disdain for those of us who own guns. Equating us with sexual predators while claiming not to, an Op-Ed is requesting we all be put on a list in an attempt to shame us.

The Sun’s Deputy Editorial Page Editor framed it this way:

As President Barack Obama announced plans this week to tighten background checks for gun buyers and increase gun tracking and research, I thought, that’s all well and good, but how about adding something immediately useful: a gun owner registry available to the public online — something like those for sex offenders. I’m not equating gun owners with predatory perverts, but the model is helpful here; I want a searchable database I can consult to find out whether my kid can have a play date at your house.

He also states that we have no reason to feel persecuted, as he doesn’t want to target us because we are born a certain way, but rather because we chose to own guns.

Gun owners may feel picked on, but they are not a persecuted class. They are individuals who have chosen to keep in their homes an object whose chief purpose is to injure or kill, whether in self defense or otherwise. The rest of us should have a right to know it’s there before we — or our children — enter.

Oh, excuse me Mr. Editorial Page Editor, what part of “shall not be infringed” do you not understand? We were born with the right to keep and bear arms. The Second Amendment is just as important as the First Amendment.

I’d like to propose an idea just as stupid as this editor’s. How about instead of targeting gun owners, we make a list of people who don’t own guns? That way these folks can register themselves as not owning guns. Then they can assume someone who isn’t on the list does own a gun. Does that sound fair?

The City of Cleveland started a gun registry last year. And guess how many people signed up for it? Watch the video below and see if you are surprised.

What do you think about a gun registry? Would you register?
