Rory and Joey Feek have had an emotional past few days. The married country duo celebrated what is likely their last Valentine’s Day together and also watched the Grammys. The Feeks were nominated for their song, “If I Needed You.”

The couple’s first date was on Valentine’s Day in 2002. Two months after that first date, they were engaged. Four months after that Valentine’s day, they were married. Their chemistry was apparent immediately.

Rory had special plans to make Valentine’s Day special for Joey. Rory wrote they would celebrate it from her hospice bed.

What I really want to do on this, our 14th Valentines together, is share a romantic candle-lit dinner with my bride: grill out rib-eyes on the campfire back home, pour two glasses of red wine and sit across from her at our kitchen table – just like we’ve done on more than one special occasion. But those things aren’t able to happen this year.
Neither Joey, nor I, have laid eyes on our farmhouse back in Tennessee since the middle of October. On top of that, Joey’s illness hasn’t allowed her to be able to eat much of anything for some time now and she sleeps most of the days and nights away. So my hope this year instead is to hold her hand and take her on a ‘virtual’ walk down memory lane together… with pictures and videos on my laptop. I want to take her back to where our lives first began together, and relive this beautiful journey that God has taken us on… from that first song she heard me sing at the Bluebird cafe, to the last one we sang together as we stood on stage and took our final bow… to the songs that she will leave behind here on earth and the ones she will soon sing for eternity to our sweet Lord in that heavenly choir up yonder.

The next night, the Feeks watched the Grammys. Joey hoped to live long enough to see the awards ceremony. Their older daughters went in their place and represented them. Joey bought Rory a ticket, but he refused to leave his dying wife.

Sadly, Joey + Rory didn’t win, but they truly were thrilled to be nominated for a song about their daughter’s birth, a song they did nothing to promote.

The Feek’s story of love and faith have touched people all over the world as they share their lives with us. Many of us were hoping that they would have won that Grammy for many reasons. But, at the end of the night, they might not have a Grammy, but they were given another day together and that’s more important.

If you enjoyed this story, please share!
