Despite having some of the strongest gun laws in the nation, the city of Chicago is still plagued by gun violence. So far in 2016, there have been 142 homicides in the city. There were 488 in 2015, up from 427 in 2014.

The politicians that run the city, instead of empowering citizens to be able to defend themselves, continue to attempt to make it more difficult for law abiding people to defend themselves. That leaves them at the mercy of the criminals, who don’t care about background checks or waiting periods.

Some have tried through public service announcements to make a difference. In a tragic turn of events, Zarriel Trotter, a 13-year-old boy who appeared in one of these PSA’s was shot — the victim of a stray bullet. He is currently in critical condition. In the PSA, Trotter said the following:

“I don’t want to live around in my community where I got to keep on hearing and hearing people keep on getting shot, people keep on getting killed.”

Here’s hoping Zarriel recovers.
