Ronald Reagan was a politician who was willing to take risks. He wanted to reach out to all Americans, not just conservatives. Because he was The Great Communicator, he was able to express our conservative values in a way that were relatable to people from all walks of life.

As a former labor President, Reagan had a unique ability to extend a hand to union members. And that is exactly what he did in his Labor Day speech in 1980. He made the case that Jimmy Carter was not a good president and he wasn’t good for blue collar America. And he did it in Democrat territory – Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

Reagan said something poignant that is a central theme to Donald Trump’s campaign.

“This country needs a new Administration, with a renewed dedication to the dream of an America, an Administration that will give that dream new life and make America great again!”

Watch the inspiring speech in its full glory:

And the second half:

Ronald Reagan made the Republican Party a welcome place for people who weren’t traditionally GOP voters. Many Reagan Democrats crossed over and voted for Reagan. After watching this speech, it’s easy to remember why this happened.
