President-elect Donald Trump has chosen retired Marine Corps General James Mattis as his Secretary of Defense.

There are a few roadblocks that need to be overcome for Mattis to be approved the Congress. The most pressing will be for Congress to pass new legislation allowing him to be selected. Current law states that a Secretary of Defense must not have been active duty in the past seven years.

Mattis was previously the commander of the United States Central Command from August 2010 to March 2013. He has a bevy of experience.

He was also well loved by those who served under him even earning the nickname “Warrior Monk” for his strong intellectual approach to combat.
