Jenna Bush Hager spoke out on Monday morning to give an update on the health of her beloved grandmother, Barbara Bush

Daily Mail reported over the weekend that Bush, 92, was refusing medical treatment for lung disease and heart failure and has instead chosen to spend her remaining days at home with her family. Hager said that she spoke to Bush on Sunday night and that the former First Lady is in “great spirits” and resting comfortably at home in Houston.

“She’s a fighter. She’s an enforcer,” Hager told the Today show. “We’re grateful for her, for everybody’s prayers and thoughts, and just know the world is better because she’s in it.”

Hager slipped up at one point and spoke of Bush in the past tense as if she had already died.

“We are grateful for her. She’s the best grandma anybody could have ever had — or have,” Hager said.

Hager appeared emotional during the interview, making it clear that her family is going through a difficult time.

“She’s with my grandpa, the man she’s loved for over 73 years. They are surrounded by family, but I think the fact that they’re together and that he still says, ‘I love you Barbie’ every night is pretty remarkable,” Hager added.

A spokesman for the Bush family  released a statement on Sunday night saying that the former first lady is in “failing health” and won’t seek additional medical treatment.

“Following a recent series of hospitalizations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care,” spokesman Jim McGrath said.

“It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself — thanks to her abiding faith — but for others,” McGrath continued. “She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving.”

Bush has been married to George H.W. Bush since 1945, making them the longest married first couple in American history. We can’t imagine what the Bush family is going through right now, and we can only pray that Barbara Bush finds the peace that she deserves.
